ROCK CLIMBING INSTRUCTOR
The Rock Climbing Instructor qualification trains and assesses candidates in safe climbing on single pitch crags and artificial climbing structures throughout the UK and Ireland.
In addition to good personal climbing skills, a rock climbing instructor will demonstrate safe group management, be an effective supervisor and encourage others to enjoy their climbing safely.
This course is suitable for rock climbing enthusiasts wishing to introduce others to the sport of rock climbing.
Registering for Rock Climbing Instructor Training
To register you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be a current member of one of the three Mountaineering Councils: Mountaineering Ireland, the British Mountaineering Council or Mountaineering Scotland.
- Be an experienced indoor and outdoor rock climber.
- Have a genuine interest in climbing and supervision of groups.
- Have led at least 15 routes which must be graded rock climbs.
- Have led at least 15 routes at a climbing wall.
- Have led at least 5 routes which must be on a outdoor bolted wall.

RCI Training
RCI Training
This is a 3 day training course run throughout Ireland.
During this course we will cover the following:
Personal climbing, building belays, tying off the belay device, solving simple problems, personal and group abseiling, structuring a session, managing groups and building group top and bottom rope systems.

RCI Assessment
RCI Assessment
The RCI assessment is for 2 days and is run throughout Ireland.
During the assessment we will look at the following:
Personal climbing, building belays, solving simple problems, personal and group abseiling, ability to manage groups.
Previous experience required:
Have attended RCI training or applied to Mountaineering Ireland for exemption from training.
RCI Refresher
RCI Refresher
Our RCI workshops are run over one or two days throughout Ireland. The workshops provide an opportunity for clients to confirm and practice skills prior to attending their assessment, or just to refresh skills previously taught, therefore maintaining current best practice.
This course will benefit clients who are keen to achieve the rock climbing instructor award.
