Mountain Skills Training
Our courses in Mountain Skills provides a general introduction to hillwalking. Mountain Skills is an accredited training course by Mountaineering Ireland.
The training syllabus is sub divided into 3 stages; MS1, MS2 & MS Assessment.
These foundation training courses cover the basics in Mountain Navigation. This course is for people who would like to walk safely in the mountains throughout the UK & Ireland.
Registering for Mountain Skills
Registration gives you access to all three schemes. Registration is free for under 18 and €22 for adults. This gives you access to DLOG and material to assist you as a hill walker.
Our aim is to deliver a high standard of coaching, focusing on devising a progressive learning environment for all clients.
MS1 Training
MS1 Training
This foundation training course is for people who would like to walk safely in the mountains throughout Ireland and the UK. This two day course is run throughout Ireland.
Mountain Skills provides a general introduction to hillwalking and the basics in mountain navigation.
During this course we will be looking at the following:
Map description, grid reference, mountain features, mountain environment and contour interpretation.
Previous experience required:
No previous hill walking experience is required.
Location: Mourne Mountains
Course dates 2024: 20-21 April, 29-30 June

MS2 Training
MS2 Training
This foundation training course is for people who would like to walk safely in the mountains throughout Ireland and the UK
Mountain Skills provides a general introduction to hillwalking and the basics in mountain navigation.
During this course we will be looking at the following:
Use of compass, mountain hazards, leave no trace, movement on steep ground, route planning and night navigation.
Previous experience required:
Have attended mountain skills 1 training or be an active hill walker.
Location: Mourne Mountains

MS Assessment
MS Assessment
Our Mountain Skills Assessments are run over two days in the mountains throughout Ireland.
Mountain Skills Assessment provides the opportunity for clients to demonstrate their mountaineering and navigational skills.
The assessment consists of a written paper and a practical assessment, including night navigation.
This course is a prerequisite for the Mountain Leader award.
Previous experience required:
Have attended mountain skills training or be an active hill walker.
